Chapter 20 A Spartan Life

“Gone and counting,” Daphne reported as she noted the time on her watch. She locked the door behind Ivy and limped back to the chair. She saw a dressing mirror across the room and could barely see her reflection in the dim post-curfew lighting. Her silver-colored school uniform blended in like camouflage.

Daphne studied the rather sterile surroundings of the dormitory apartment. It had a nice queen-size bed, but the linens were white with a gray pintuck duvet cover. The rest of the apartment was equally boring. The walls and kitchen appliances were all white. The Berber carpet was mottled grey and white. The furnishings consisted of a nightstand, student desk, small dining table and two straight back chairs, all with a dark grey metallic finish. A padded lounge chair beneath the window was upholstered in a fabric printed with silhouettes of winter trees against a light gray.

“Everything’s so bland. I’m already missing my purple shoes,” Daphne said to Baden. “This place really needs a paint job.”

“Seriously, Daphne?” Baden asked. “Now is not the time to redecorate the place.”

“The previous decorator was color-challenged.”

“It’s the least of your worries,” he replied.

“I will go stark raving mad in twenty-four hours. It’s depressing. Really. It’s like an asylum in here.”

“Deal with it.”

“I will. Thanks for your concern,” Daphne said. “Room service, I’d like another electric shock treatment please.”

Baden snorted. “Whatever works.”

“I’m sure I’ll be fine.”

“Get some sleep, Sis. Tomorrow will be a challenging day.”

“Roger that.”

Daphne got up and looked in the closet. Two pair of polished white leather loafers sat on a low shelf. Several silver school uniforms were hung neatly in a row. She checked the built-in drawers to find white panties and bras and two pair of pajamas exactly like the ones Ivy had been wearing. They were gray and white striped.

“Arrggh!” Daphne cried out, mainly in sympathy for Ivy. “Wardrobe matches the room.”

“You’ll be leaving in a few days,” Baden said.

“My sister needs intensive fashion therapy and color rehab.”

“Your job is to become her. Get over it.”

“Yes, master. I shall embrace my inner spartan,” Daphne replied and headed for the sparkling white bathroom.

“I’ll let you know when I have Ivy,” Baden said. “Signing off.”

A little exploring found a bottle of ibuprofen in the medicine cabinet. Daphne popped four of them in her mouth and washed the pills down with water from the sink, slurping from the faucet. Loading dose.

Before turning in for the night, she decided to run a hot bath in the tub. There was a jar of bath salts on a high shelf. Vanilla. Of course, it is.

She lowered herself into the tub. being careful to keep the injured ankle out of the water, hooked over the side. It was pure heaven to relax for a moment, and she started to fade.

Girl survives attempted murder only to drown after falling asleep in the bathtub like a dumbass. She hoisted herself up and dried off with a luxurious white towel with ‘Standwell Institute’ embroidered in grey script along one edge.
